Romantic Love – Learning All About It
Love is involuntary. It does not happen with one’s choice. You see a person, and if you feel attracted towards them- then it’s probably an indication that you’re in love. Developing feelings for someone is the start of every love story. So, as you go and approach that person, you talk, meet a few more times and the next thing you know, you’re both in a relationship.
Not to speed things up, but love is not just about liking someone. Your romantic love will go through a few more phases till it actually attains that level of ‘true’ romantic love.
What is romantic love?
Romantic love definition can be described as what tends to be infatuation or attraction between lovers. The type of love that makes your heart flutter fast, your knees weak and you uncontrollably find yourself constantly immersed in thoughts of your partner.
Romantic love is the first stage of love in any relationship and is purely driven by hormonal effects as your brain releases chemicals that make you feel exhilarated or passionate. This is what drives your intimacy, passion and most importantly, desire.
Your romantic love marks the start of something new. As you tend to grow feelings for your partner, you both are constantly drawn towards each other due to intense motivation for an emotional union. Romantic love is mostly based on sexual attraction for the opposite gender- a feeling which is natural among all humans.
The phases of romantic love
As sudden and abrupt it may be that love enters your life out of nowhere, yet it will take time to grow and develop over the years. This is necessary for the growth of a healthy relationship because if romantic love is only based on lust for the other, then it will die out in a few months’ time.
Relationships go through ups and downs all the time, but as long as you’re dedicated, loyal and trustful in your partner, your love is bound to take you places.
1. The honeymoon phase
This tends to be the most exciting and attractive phase for lovers. In this phase, you will find yourself constantly drawn towards your partner for sexual desires primarily. All the flaws and imperfections of your partner seem of hardly any importance, and it is lust that will only matter. Your brain, under the influence of hormones like dopamine and serotonin, will keep you in a pleasant mood constantly.
You idealize the other person so much that you’ll find yourself immersed in thoughts of your lover nearly all the time. This is accompanied by the desire to spend emotional moments with your partner.
The honeymoon phase is filled with a drive of passion which makes love feel as often described in movies, novels, and dramas- to be in a fantasy.
2. The individuation phase
However, within a few months, the infatuation shortly dies out, and all the effects of the hormones began to wear out. This is the phase where you’ll actually start learning about your partner and recognize their habits, routine, thoughts, beliefs, etc.
You stop pretending in front of each other as the passion and lust eventually dies out. At this point, you are hit hard by reality when you find that your partner is not perfect as you assumed them to be.
In most relationships, as the glam of the honeymoon stage wears off, partners often find themselves getting annoyed at one another, resulting in fights and quarrels.
It requires a lot of patience to sit down, and resolve your problems like mature adults to keep your relationship growing.
Stay loyal and respectful towards your partner throughout, and it will help you overcome many problems.
3. Mature love/ True romantic love phase
If you ask what is true romantic love, then it will be described as a subtle and peace offering phase when your romantic love transforms into its purest form. Even though all the sexual passion and heated emotions fade away, but you come to terms with your partner.
You both understand and respect the needs of one another, and it is now that love has formed an inseparable bond between you two. It is the devotion that leads to successful marriages which are built on the pillars of emotional support, commitment, understanding, compromise, respect, friendship, and trust.
You share cute, intimate moments with your lover as well as share jokes and feel open to criticism. This kind of love is ever-lasting and meaningful where you realize that you have been through thick and thin with your partner. Thus, you are always willing to stay by your soulmate without any obligation of desires. It is the most serene and truthful expression of love.
We are always searching for love. But when love comes to you, that is when you realize your story might actually make sense.
All love stories deserve to find a happy end. And if you and your partner are dedicated to making things work, love will entwine you both in such a magical journey such that you’ve never experienced before.
